Payments modernization, from the rail connection to the board paper.

I advise banks, credit unions, PSPs, exchange houses and virtual asset firms on modernizing how they move money. I owned the target architecture for BMO's Real-Time Rail and ISO 20022 programmes, and I've run $50MM-a-year banking portfolios. You get a senior architect who has shipped this, on a fixed scope.

The dates driving payments work

Most modernization work right now is set by a regulator or a scheme, not by a strategy deck. These are the deadlines my clients are planning around.

  1. UAEReconciliation deadline under the new Central Bank law, covering open finance, money transfer, stored value and virtual asset payment services.
  2. SwiftUnstructured-only postal addresses are rejected and MT101 is discontinued.
  3. CanadaReal-Time Rail launches. Institutions must be able to receive; sending is optional at first.
  4. CanadaFull industry participation on the Real-Time Rail is expected.
  5. SwiftExceptions and investigations move to ISO 20022 messages.
  6. SwiftMT9xx statement messages are retired.

Also coming, without fixed dates: Aani cross-border, e-direct debit and B2B payments in the UAE; accreditation under Canada's consumer-driven banking framework; and wider FedNow use among US banks and credit unions.

Practice areas

Two areas, one standard of evidence

Every engagement ends with something your board, your regulator and your delivery team can each act on.

Banks · credit unions · PSPs · exchange houses · switches

Payments modernization

  • Real-time rails: Canada's RTR, UAE Aani, Saudi sarie, FedNow and RTP
  • ISO 20022 beyond translation: structured data, exceptions, statements
  • Target architecture, vendor selection and a design authority that holds
  • Open banking and payment initiation

VASPs · token issuers · custodians · banks adding digital assets

Digital assets & VASPs

  • Inspection readiness against VARA, CBUAE and ADGM expectations
  • Custody, settlement and Travel Rule architecture
  • Tokenization platforms: onboarding, KYC/KYB, controlled transfers
  • Technology governance that produces evidence, not just policy

How I work

Fixed scope, senior hands, clear lines

Fixed-scope first

Most clients start with a three-to-four-week assessment at a fixed fee. You see the output before committing to anything larger.

Remote, with on-site weeks

I work from Toronto across North American and GCC hours. Each statement of work names the weeks I'm on site with your team.

Independent, and disclosed

I don't resell software. The company I contract through also builds applications; I disclose that up front, and it won't bid on build work from my advice without your written consent.

Canada · Real-Time Rail

Receiving is the easy part

At launch, institutions only have to receive RTR payments. The hard part is sending: fraud controls for irrevocable payments, liquidity and pre-funding, and 24/7 operations. Plan that work now, not in 2027.

Global · ISO 20022

ISO 20022 isn't done

Many banks met the Swift cutover with translation layers. Structured addresses, exceptions and investigations, and statements arrive between 2026 and 2028, and each one exposes data you don't hold yet.

A 30-minute call is enough to tell whether a fixed-scope assessment makes sense. I'll send a two-page scope within 48 hours if it does.
